It never really occurred to me before how many people were affected by the family split and that their lives would have never been the same; I had only ever looked at the situation from my own perspective. Whatever the financial outcome of the matter, it will never give me the sense of joy that I have in finding my mother's family.

I may have told you in earlier letters that I have been researching my family tree on and off for 30 years now, grilling relatives and buying certificates (I bought my first ones from Somerset House when they cost one shilling each!) but the number that I have, or the family tree which I have been able to compile pales into insignificance compared with the ones you have just sent me. I am still reeling from the wonderful surprise. It is a pity that you were not present to see my astonishment and delight when they arrived.

On the telephone I joked that the family tree would be a very welcome Christmas present, little did I realise then just how marvellous a Christmas present it would be.
